I know everyone always says it, but can you seriously believe it is June already?! Where does the time go? I feel like I just started my co-op at CMHC but I have already been there for almost a month. Honestly, with working full time at a new job, I have been very busy and I am surprised I have as many May favourites as I do. However, my happiness journey is very important to me so I always make sure to make time for the things I love to do and make me feel fulfilled. With that being said, let’s jump into my current lifestyle favourites! Don’t forget to let me know what you have been loving in the comments; I love to explore new products, recipes and whatever else you are loving. Also, I start working at Sephora as a skincare consultant in June so I am planning on having a ton of favourites in the coming months!
Book ~ The Constant Princess by Philippa Gregory
I love organizing, de-cluttering and clearing things out. Something about it just calms me and I always feel accomplished when I am done. I recently did a giant clear out of my overwhelming amount of books I have stored at home. I was a die-hard Pretty Little Liars fan in high school and had bought every single book in the collection. I realized that I would never read them again and they took up way too much space, so they had to go. Luckily, there is a lovely little bookstore in my hometown that gives you credit to their store if you bring books in for them to sell. After receiving my credit, I love to browse the endless amount of books and seeing what new ones that are worthy to add to my collection.
I found The Constant Princess because I always like to see what I can find from Philippa Gregory. She is known for writing historical fiction centered on the Tudor Dynasty. I am a huge history nerd, especially when it comes to Queen Elizabeth I and the Tudor Dynasty. I love to discover new characters in Gregory’s books and then googling them to learn how they connect to the book and to European history. The Constant Princess follows the life of Catherine of Aragon, queen of England from 1509 to 1533. I am not finished yet, but so far it’s been really interesting. I love to connect this book to one of my favourite books by Gregory, The Other Boleyn Girl. The Constant Princess is like the prequel to The Other Boleyn Girl. And can we just say, King Henry VIII would’ve been such a f*kboy if he lived in 2017.
Recipes/Food ~ Oh She Glows Everyday by Angela Liddon
I suppose this could also be included under books but I don’t really have a food favourite this month (besides the fact that I discovered fiddleheads and I have been eating them like crazy!!). As you know if you read my post about changing my diet, I recently cut meat and fish out of my diet for a variety of reasons. Because I am more limited in my food choices (I am also dairy sensitive), having a plant-based cookbook at home really helps me avoid making the same dishes over and over again. Oh She Glows Everyday is a great cookbook for quick, healthy meals. I work full time and will be starting a part time job at Sephora so quick meals are a must for me. I highly recommend checking out this book if you are a cookbook kind of person!
TV ~ Grace and Frankie; The Handmaid’s Tale
After months of my mom telling me how good Grace and Frankie is, I finally decided to start watching it. All I can say is, why did I not start watching this sooner?! This show is absolutely hilarious. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin seriously make the show so good. I got my roommate hooked on it too and so for the whole month of May, Grace and Frankie was always playing somewhere in the house. We were discussing who our favourite characters are (I think I’d have to say Frankie or Sol) and who we most relate to, and I can see myself a bit in both Grace and Frankie. They are totally opposite personalities but I feel like I balance right in the middle. Highly, highly, highly recommend this show!
My second TV favourite was also recommended by my mom. The Handmaid’s Tale (based on the amazing book by Canadian author Margaret Atwood) was recently released on Hulu and Bravo. As soon as I saw the trailer, I knew I had to watch it. (Also, Alexis Bledel is in it – I’m a diehard Gilmore Girls fan). I read the Handmaid’s Tale in high school, but until I started watching the show I forgot how much I loved the story. After binging all 5 episodes currently out, I went on Amazon and ordered my own copy of the book to add to my treasured collection. If you haven’t read the book, I recommend reading it first and then watch the show. And warning, the show is graphic and I think is rated R.
Movie ~ Baywatch
Baywatch was just released last week, and my boyfriend and I wanted to see it during opening week. (Not gonna lie, we just wanted to go because it is filled with gorgeous people… Hellloooo, Zac Efron). Going into it, I thought it would be cringy; while I love how Zac Efron looks, I don’t really like his acting. However, it was really awesome! They really amped up the original Baywatch with lots of action, and I found the jokes really funny. I love Dwayne Johnson; I think he would be the nicest, most charming person in real life. He really brought the movie together and in my opinion, knocked it out of the park.
Music ~ Lauren Alaina’s Road Less Travelled
As I have mentioned before, I go crazy with country music in the summer. I literally don’t listen to any other genre of music. After discovering Lauren Alaina’s song Road Less Travelled (my #1 summer jam), I downloaded the entire album and have been loving it. While there are a lot of slow songs, they are really great and the fast paced songs can make me stop and dance wherever I am. I watched Lauren Alaina’s season of American Idol and was a really big fan of her. She can in second behind Scotty McCreery and I am so glad to see her making waves in the country music world. She reminds me of the country version of Meaghan Trainor, as her songs centre on girl power and being true to who you are. If you like feel-good country music, check this album out.
Makeup ~ Wet n’ Wild MegaGlo Makeup Stick in Where’s Walnut/Physician’s Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Bronzer, Blush and Eyeshadow in Vegas Strip
For a while now, I’ve been wanting to try out the cream contouring trend. It is everywhere!! However, I didn’t want to spend a fortune on a high-end palette in case I wasn’t a fan of how it looked on me. I decided to go with this Wet n’ Wild one, which I believe cost me about $5. I really like how easy this one is to blend out! I would say the colour is too warm for contouring, but it is great to use as a cream bronzer. It gives the skin a very natural, glowy warmth and stays on for the day. If you are looking to try cream contour/bronzer, I definitely recommend this one. For five bucks, you can’t really go wrong.
I have definitely mentioned this product on my blog before, because every single year I go through the same routine with it. I always refuse to wear it in the winter, because it is ‘too sparkly’ or isn’t ‘bronzy enough.’ However, as soon as warmer weather hits, I wear this product almost on a daily basis. It just looks SO good on tanned skin. I have been using this as an all-over cheek bronzer, as a highlighter (using the top two strips) and eyeshadow. My favourite way to wear it is all over my cheek paired with a gold and bronze smoky eye when I am extra tanned. It makes your skin looks so glowy. It just screams summer to me and I love it.
Misc ~ Earrings created by Gillian Hannah Berry Designs/Essential Oils
The Halifax Seaport Market is my little taste of home here in Halifax. As a valley girl living in the city, I love to go to the market on Saturdays to pick up some local eggs and veggies that are harder to find in Halifax. Last time I went, I found these gorgeous, locally made earrings by Gillian Hannah Berry Designs. I don’t normally buy the artisanal jewelry because it can get expensive, but these were 50% off and I was on the hunt for dangly earrings as I normally wear studs. Also, they have purple crystal in them which reminds me of amethyst, which is my birthstone (it might actually be amethyst, I’m not sure). I like them because they have that perfect balance between dressy and casual, so I can wear them with any outfit.
I have been diffusing essential oils in my living room like crazy for the last couple months. I really like to having them diffusing while I do yoga, as it makes the room smell fresh and clean and I like to think I am breathing in the benefits of them when I am exercising. I used the Blue Apples Café’s organic lemon essential oil mixed with vinegar to help clean my dishwasher the other day, which helps to freshen up the smell of it. The Sage peppermint oil is great to diffuse or you could add a few drops of it in your bath to help relax your muscles after a long day. Some other current favourites are wintergreen oil and eucalyptus oil.
I hope you had a great month of May! What are the favourites that make your day just that much better?
