My First Experience with Colourpop Cosmetics

Finally! I am back! So much for a blog post every week. This summer has been crazy busy for me, but in the best way. I just returned home from California!! It was amazing and I am so lucky to have the opportunity to have gone. But now I am back, and have a few ideas for upcoming posts on here. So first thing on the agenda… reviewing my Colourpop order!

Colourpop is a brand that has been circling the beauty community for a few years now, and it is known for their cheap prices and great quality. After hearing tons of great reviews on every product, I knew I had to try it!

The only thing holding me back was the fact that Colourpop is an American brand, and with that comes shipping and duty. I didn’t want to spend $20 and then get hit with a huge customs fee. So I did a lot of research, read reviews and found out that most people buying from Canada weren’t being charged duty if their order was under $100 CDN. Finally I decided to take the risk (barely – because my order was only just over $20) and order a Ultra Satin Lip and an Ultra Matte Lip. I paid $10 in shipping.

As a first time customer, I was given a $5 coupon to use on my first order as well, which was awesome!

In one review I read, a girl said she ordered to Nova Scotia and it took over a month to arrive from Oxnard, California. So going into this I expected quite a long wait time. However, my parcel arrived in just over a week! I was very impressed. Everything was packaged nice and safely and best part of all… NO CUSTOM FEE! I was so happy.

(This could change depending on the money spent – I only spent $22.00 CDN including shipping.)

When opening the bubble wrapped package, they had included the two lippies and then a few pamphlets about each product and others that they sell online. Colourpop is only available online.

Like I said, I purchased two products. I got an Ultra Satin Lip in the colour ‘Dopey’ and an Ultra Matte Lip in the colour ‘Beeper’. Like the name suggests, the Ultra Satin has a bit of a shine but still has a liquid lipstick formula, and the Ultra Matte dries completely matte. Each liquid lipstick was $6 USD, but even with the exchange rate that is extremely cheap for a good quality liquid lipstick. Most things on the Colourpop website range between $5-$10 USD.

I really wanted a nude with a cool toned brown base, and although the picture of Beeper on the website looks quite warm toned, other photos of people wearing it on Instagram showed a much cooler swatch. On me, it is fairly cool toned, but it is much darker than this photo looks. I still really like the colour and I don’t have anything like it in my collection. I did notice that layering the Ultra Matte Lip can start to feel heavy on the lips, so I would only recommend one layer and touch up only the areas that have lost colour. When I wore Beeper the first time, I ate oily foods and the colour didn’t hold up that well (which is pretty common with lip products mixing with oily food). I could feel the liquid lipstick chunking of my lips while I was eating. However, when I touched my lips by smoothing the chunky parts with a Kleenex and then reapplying it, it looked great! It lasted for the rest of the day.

I was even more impressed with the Ultra Satin Lip. I again wanted a cool toned mauve which is exactly what I got. And again, it is darker on me than in the photo but only slightly and still looks great! The unique thing about the Ultra Satin Lips is that they are a liquid lipstick formula, but they don’t dry completely matte. However, they last as long as a matte liquid lipstick! I was amazed at how well this stayed on. I wore it from about 10 AM to 5 PM and never had to retouch once. I was in hot weather all day and it stayed in place perfectly. I have found that other brands, especially my Anastasia Beverly Hills liquid lipstick in ‘American Doll’, move around a lot when it is hot and humid. Dopey did not budge. I did find that both formulas accentuated the fine lines on my lips, but I don’t care about that at all. If you do, try applying a lip balm or lip liner underneath beforehand.

Overall, I was really impressed with my order. I would definitely order from Colourpop again, but just to be safe I would stay close to the $20-$30 mark so duties isn’t a risk. If you have heard of Colourpop Cosmetics and have been wanting to try it but the duties are freaking you out, I would say go for it! Just don’t spend more than $100 at one time (according to other reviews). I have also heard great reviews on their eyeliners and eyeshadows. I can’t wait to try more from Colourpop!
