Worth it? Kat Von D vs. Revlon Liquid Lipsticks

I’m back! It has been over a month since I have posted, but after what seems like a million years of studying and exams, I am home on summer vacation and have a new blog post to share!

I am going to do a comparison between a high end liquid lipstick and a drugstore one. It seems like every brand is creating a liquid lipstick these days and for a good reason – they are so much better than regular lipsticks.

If you aren’t quite sure what a liquid lipstick is, they are opaque and (usually) matte formulas that are more wet in the tube than a regular lipstick. They have incredible lasting power which makes them unique to a regular lipstick. They look similar to lip glosses because you apply them with a wand.

The two lipsticks going head to head today are the Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor in ‘Obsession’ and the Kat Von D Beauty Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in ‘Mother’.

I wanted to compare these products because both have gotten a lot of hype online – especially Kat Von D’s liquid lipsticks – but the Revlon ones ($10.99) sells for less than half the price of the Kat Von D ones ($24). So, having already been loving both products, I wanted to specifically compare each one to see which one was better quality for money spent.

On the left I am wearing Kat Von D’s liquid lipstick and on the right I am wearing Revlon’s. Each photo was taken about an hour after applying, and as you can see the Revlon one is not matte, as the name claims. Most people who are looking for a liquid lipstick are looking for that matte finish because it usually guarantees longevity. The Revlon liquid lipstick never went completely matte and also felt sticky when I pressed my lips together. On the other hand, Kat Von D’s went completely matte after about 5 minutes of wearing it and there was no stickiness at all, it was actually completely dry.

I did a transfer test on the back on my hand to see how well each product dried. As you can see, Kat Von D’s (on the left) barely left a trace; you can see the faintest line on my hand from my bottom lip. The Revlon one transferred a lot more, but not as bad as I thought it would have because of the shine it had. Although drying completely means the product will withstand more, it also means that it will probably feel drier on the lips. My lips did feel drier with the Kat Von D product than the Revlon one, and I made sure to put lip balm on after wearing it.

After wearing each product for about an hour and a half, I had lunch. I had soup on both days, which I thought would be the ultimate test on the products’ longevity because I thought the hot soup would melt the color away. I was incredibly impressed by the durability of the Kat Von D product (left above). The only part of my lips that faded at all was the middle of the bottom, and it only faded in the slightest. I couldn’t even tell that I had eaten unless I looked very closely. The Revlon one (right), however, didn’t hold up quite as well. It didn’t look horrible, but it could have definitely used a little touch up. It had started to look patchy and faded, especially in the center of my lips.

I wore each product for 4 1/2 hours, during which I packed up my apartment which included ripping tape with my teeth (more so on the day I wore the Kat Von D liquid lipstick). I was impressed with the longevity of both products, but overall the Kat Von D product lasted a bit better than the Revlon one. I didn’t use a lip liner under either one because I didn’t feel like a needed one. The applicators are fairly easy to apply product with and if I needed more precision I would have used a lip brush. Both products were very easy to remove with makeup remover.

As for smell, the Revlon one smells EXTREMELY sugary. If you aren’t a fan of scented lip products, this one might turn you off. I don’t mind the smell but I don’t love it. The Kat Von D liquid lipstick is unscented.

In my opinion, I think the Kat Von D liquid lipstick is the winner here. It dried matte, lasted incredibly and didn’t dry my lips out too badly. If you are looking for a good liquid lipstick, Kat Von D offers 28 colors in a variety of shades.

However, if you are looking for something a little cheaper, the Revlon liquid lipsticks are good if you don’t mind touching up through the day. They don’t dry matte but they are more moisturizing than the Kat Von D ones. They offer 8 shades. Just make sure to carry it with you!
