2015 was a year of changes, adjustments and adventures for me. I moved into my first apartment, saw many beautiful cities in Canada, started my second year in university, began a new job and discovered many things about myself and the person I would like to become. And while all of these things are meaningful and important to experience, I also discovered some beauty products that changed my skincare and makeup game in 2015. Beauty and makeup is not as significant as other things may be, but finding those perfect products is pretty exciting. Here are a few products that really stood out to me in 2015!
Please note: I could not for the life of me get my photos to properly rotate in WordPress. I spent about an hour trying to figure out how and I think it is because I took my photos on my iPhone. I almost decided not to include photos but I decided to put them in rotated incorrectly in case anyone wanted to know what the products looked like. Hopefully I can get this figured out for my next blog post 😦 sorry about this.
Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Aging Cleansing Gel
I actually purchased this face wash in October or November of 2014 but I had to include it because it is now January 2016 and I am only 3/4 through the bottle! I was unsure to buy it at first because it is pretty pricey for a cleanser but it was so worth it. I haven’t had to buy face wash in more than a year because this stuff comes in a pretty substantial bottle and you need less than a pea size amount every time you use it. Noted, I only use it in the mornings so if you use it day and night it won’t last as long but I’m betting it would still last 6 or 7 months. Not only does it last forever but it also is a great formula. It contains both glycolic and salcylic acid which helps to prevent breakouts. Since I started using this stuff I haven’t got a major breakout. Not only that but it also has an anti-wrinkle technology so it is good for people of all ages. It’s incredible! I highly recommend this.
Hask Keratin Protein Smoothing Shine Oil
I discovered this hair oil earlier in 2015. It comes in a very tiny bottle which is why I bought it because I wasn’t sure if I would like it because my hair can get oily pretty quickly. However, I was pleasantly surprised! The little bottle actually lasts quite a while, about 3 months for me, and the oil is really light. I apply this to the ends of my hair and it makes my ends look soft and shiny. It also smells really great. It doesn’t weigh my hair down at all and doesn’t add any excess oil to my roots. And for a 3 dollar price point, you can’t really go wrong!
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz Pencil in Taupe.
I really believe that when it comes to makeup, structured eyebrows are crucial. Eyebrows frame your face and really add that finishing touch to your look, especially if you wear a lot of eye makeup. At the least, I always have a clear brow gel in my eyebrows to give them some structure. I have used a lot of different brow products such as powder, pomade and other pencils but hands down the Brow Wiz is the best product I have found. Even if I use a powder, I will still outline my brows with the Brow Wiz to give shape to them. It is smooth to apply and blends out really nicely with the spoolie which comes on the other end of it. Sometimes I can find powders can look a bit patchy and brow pomades (or gel) can be too harsh if applied incorrectly. The Brow Wiz looks the most natural, which is what I am going for most days. Anastasia Beverly Hills is known for being the ‘Queen of Brows’ and she really hit it out of the park with the Brow Wiz!
Clinique Superprimer Universal Face Primer
I bought this Clinique primer on a whim. I hadn’t read any reviews on it but had a giftcard and decided last minute to purchase it. And am I glad I did! This is probably my #1 favourite product of 2015. I have never used a primer that holds on to my foundation and concealer for so long. It doesn’t let any of my makeup budge all day. When using other primers, I can see the foundation wearing away on my chin and around my nose after about 4 or 5 hours. However, with the Superprimer, my foundation will look the same when I wash my face at night as when I applied my makeup in the morning. It has a bit of a tacky texture which is why the foundation really grabs onto it. It doesn’t break me out or make my makeup patchy throughout the day either. The only downfall it has is it doesn’t do much to fill in pores. If you find you have large pores, I would recommend using the Superprimer first, let it sit for a minute and then go in with a smoothing primer over top where your pores are noticeable.
Wet N’ Wild Eyeshadow Trio in Walking on Eggshells
Wet N’ Wild is known for being a very cheap brand but with impressive quality for the price point. I don’t think I have ever used an eyeshadow more than I use this little trio. I don’t use the pink shade, but I use the lightest shade all over my lid and the brown in my crease on days when I want to wear makeup but nothing too noticeable. The pigmentation of these eyeshadows are incredible. They easily compare to high-end eyeshadows but they are a fraction of the price. This trio is $3. You can’t go wrong for $3! I also really recommend these eyeshadows to anyone just starting to use makeup because the colors are light and easily fixable if you make a mistake. They are also really buildable so if you want more colour you can just apply more product! Definitely my favourite eyeshadows of 2015.
NYX Mosaic Powder in 02 Latte
I’ve had this bronzer since 2013 or 2014 but often abandoned it because I used other bronzers I purchased from Sephora. However, in 2015 I found myself picking it back up more and more. The color is pretty neutral on my skin tone, not too ashy but not too orange either. Sometimes if bronzer is too ashy in color it can make your skin look dull and ill, and if bronzer is too orange it can tend to look muddy. I like to use this bronzer both to contour and just lightly bronze my face. It builds nicely without looking patchy. If you apply it too low beneath your cheekbones it can go a bit muddy and sloppy but as long as you apply it directly underneath your cheekbones it gives that perfect illusion of having higher, more chiseled cheekbones.
BECCA Cosmetics Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop
And last but certainly not least, I had to include BECCA’s Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop created by Jaclyn Hill. This highlight has been my baby in my makeup collection ever since I got it earlier this year. It is the perfect golden peachy highlight to make any skin tone look glowly and bright. If I have a full face of makeup on I drench myself in this stuff. I really love the latest trend of having a really strong highlight. I really think it just makes my skin look more alive and healthy. If you aren’t a fan of having a noticeable highlight, this product can also be put on very lightly to get that glow-from-within look. Since I have gotten Champagne Pop, I have used it on all my friends, on my sister and on my mom because it looks great on all skin tones and textures. If you are very very pale, it might it a little too orange-y if too much is applied, but if you use a very light hand it will still look great! This highlight was made in collaboration with Youtuber Jaclyn Hill, and if you are someone who is just starting out in makeup or have been playing with it for a long time, I really recommend checking out her channel.
Wishing you all the best in 2016!
